At St Joseph’s Catholic College, the Middle School aims to move students gently from the close knit, Primary School classroom environment towards the more independent style of learning required in the Senior School.
Pastoral Care is the responsibility of the students’ prime teacher, and the school day starts with Home Room, providing a positive and caring beginning to the day. The academic curriculum is integrated using units of learning that combine capabilities from different subjects. Students move from 2 core subject teachers in Year 7 to 5 teachers in Year 9. Teachers differentiate the curriculum to support students with special needs, as well as providing educational experiences for gifted and talented students. Tutors are engaged in the classroom to support student learning.
The subjects studied in Years 7 to 9 aim to give students a broad and balanced education. English, Mathematics, History and Science are offered using the curriculum outlined by the Australian Curriculum Assessment Reporting Authority (ACARA). Our diocesan Religious Education program (Journey in Faith) is taught throughout the secondary years, in conjunction with the Diocesan Human Sexuality Programme (Made in the Image of God). Health and Physical Education (HPE) use the curriculum outlined by the Northern Territory Curriculum Framework (NTCF). Like all Australian schools we are transitioning all programs to Australian Curriculum over the coming years.
In Years 7 and 8, elective subjects are studied to give students exposure to a wide range of subjects. These include: Chinese, Music, Visual Arts, Drama, Dance, Home Economics and Design and Technology. Then in Year 9 students choose 2 of the above elective subjects which to study in more depth.
So St Joseph’s Middle School offers a comprehensive education program, tailored to the needs of the individual student, combined with an ‘every student matters’ approach to pastoral care.
